The picture of the chapel inside the PIME house of Manila. Here for these past days we prayed and shared bread and wine. Today Don Matteo introduces us to the prayer of Jesus, the Our Father. Jesus is happy at the request “Teach us to pray”. So he teaches. Not a formula or a kind of insurance covering the damages done or suffered, but a relationship with Abba the Father. Prayer that refers to the present, the today’s daily bread. A prayer that reminds us that, in the past and in spite of everything done, despite our weaknesses, God was still caring for us and a prayer for the future, to help us to stay away from the coming temptations. The “Our Father” is a Relationship to be practiced frequently, by training ourselves. In this way we can become masters of all the prayers. Of course this must be done in the presence of the Holy Spirit, the real protagonist and the driving force underneath every prayer.
Protagonists of the second meditation are the two disciples of Emmaus. Sadly, they know everything yet not understanding it. Jesus gets to their side, listening and explaining. Then the blossoming relationship and the subsequent revelation in the breaking of bread. With joy they return and meet with the others. At the end of this journey, they all are in the Temple, which is the starting place of another kind of journey. The last words of the Gospel of Luke reminds us that the meaning of life and history is not emphasized in the personal ego but in the encounter with others. The community is the living temple. A meeting already revealed in the Passover of Christ. A self-giving to others for love. Although doubted the disciples were sent into the world. Like us today, temple perhaps imperfect, but inhabited by the presence of the Risen One. So we are communities seeking to testify, on the roads (Philippines), that He is still with us, and with us with others too.
You could say that today there are two temples: one in the world of things, the other in what the Word invoked, enlightened and lived. The latter is higher than the first. The dust, the years, the debris may have covered it, but just dig somewhere, there, where it aroused, to find the source and with this new energy we can shape a better world, made in the name of the Father. World of useful things and rightful words.
