L’interesse del PIME (Pontificio Istituto Missioni Estere) per le Filippine si deve attribuire a p. Angelo Saverio Zanesi, prete canossiano di Cremona, missionario nell’isola di Samar. Nel 1966 questi sollecita il superiore generale del Pime mons. Aristide Pirovano ad inviare dei missionari nelle Filippine, visto che nello stesso periodo molti padri vengono espulsi dalla Birmania. Mons. Pirovano dimostra un certo interesse di cui p. Zanesi informa il nunzio a Manila, mons. Carlo Martini. Nel gennaio del 1967, mons. Pirovano, già in viaggio ad Hong Kong, visita le Filippine. Piovono altre richieste di lavoro. Il 5 marzo 1968, dopo molti contatti, trattative ed un’altra visita esplorativa mons. Pirovano scrive al nuovo nunzio, mons. Carmine Rocco, che il Pime accetta il lavoro offerto nelle diocesi di San Pablo (al nord) e Dipolog (al sud); precisamente: “…la direzione del seminario minore di San Pablo, la parrocchia di Santa Cruz e l’erigenda parrocchia di Holiday Hill, sempre nella stessa diocesi, e il distretto missionario di Siocon, nella diocesi di Dipolog”. I primi tre missionari (p. Pietro Bonaldo, p. Joseph Vancio e fratel Giovanni Arici) sono a San Pablo il 6 dicembre 1968. Altri seguiranno immediatamente.
Nel 2000 delle antiche missioni, il PIME conservava solo la parrocchia di Sirawai, nella Diocesi di Dipolog, da dove tra l’altro e uscito il primo sacerdote filippino del PIME, p.Romeo Catan. Si è consolidato solo nelle diocesi di Parañaque (MetroManila), Zamboanga City, Kidapawan, e nella prelatura di Ipil. Ha accettato anche di gestire una parrocchia nella diocesi di Antique (Isola di Panay). Alcuni impegni del passato sono stati ceduti al clero diocesano locale o ad altri istituti religiosi. Attualmente i padri del PIME lavorano nelle parrocchie di: Sinunuc (Zamboanga), Sampoli e LakeWood (Prelatura di Ipil), GreenFields-Arakan Valley (Kidapawan), Guinsang-an in SanJosè de Buenavista (Panay, Antique), Maria Regina degli Apostoli, in Parañaque (MetroManila) e in Santa Teresita ng Batang Hesus Parish, Olaes, GMA, Diocesi of Imus. Il PIME è ancora impegnato in alcuni programmi per le Popolazioni Indigene, Manobo/B’laang (Kidapawan) e Subanen (Ipil). P.Sebastano D’Ambra gestisce in Zamboanga City il Silsilah, una organizzazione per il dialogo con i musulmani. La Sede Regionale è in Suterville, Zamboanga City. Recentemente PIME ha iniziato a lavorare in nell’isola di Lubang (Vicariato di Mindoro Occidentale)
(2017) Il PIME nelle Filippine ha ridotto ulteriormente la sua presenza. Ha lasciato da qualche hanno l’Isola di Lubang e recentemente le missioni in Arakan Valley, quella in Sirawai e quelle nella Diocesi di Antique (Panay). E’ presente nella nuova parrocchia di Santa Teresita ng Batang Hesus Parish, Olaes, GMA, Diocese of Imus. Continua il suo lavoro in Sinunuc (Zamboanga City), Sampoli e Lakewood nella Diocesi di Ipil e nella Diocesi di Paranaque (MetroManila). Nella Diocesi di Kidapawan rimane un rappresentante che lavora tra le popolazioni indigene e in quella di Zamboanga uno per il dialogo interreligioso (Silsilah). La casa regionale è ora in Manila.
(2018) Il 6 dicembre 2018 si è celebrato il 50mo della presenza del PIME nelle Filippine. Varie celebrazioni si sono tenute nelle Diocesi dove siamo presentiç Zamboanga, Ipil, Kidapawan e Manila. A metà anno è iniziato un nuovo impegno nella Diocesi di Ipil dando vita ad una nuova parrocchia a Pagni, situata nella parte est della cittadina di Ipil, Zamboanga Sibugay. Un avvicendamento è avvenuto nella parrocchia di Sinunuc (Zamboanga) con la partenza di p.Nevio e il suo posto preso da p.Mollick. Un’altro nella parrocchia del PIME a Manila con la partenza di p.Sandalo, sostituito da p.Caelli.
(2020-2021) Con il COVID le presenze nelle Regione diminuiscono. P.Luciano rimane in Italia, prima in lockdown nella casa degli anziani di Rancio di Lecco, dove assisterà alla morte di p.Gianni Sandalo, per poi essere assegnato alla casa di Treviso. Rientra per rimanere definitivamente a Rancio, Lecco p.Ilario Trobbiani, mentre p.Carrara da l’addio a Alta Tierra per l’Italia dove viene nominato Segretario Generale dell’Istituto. Nella Diocesi di Ipil si apre una nuova parrocchia, ma se ne chiude un’altra, mentre a Lakewood padre Vettoretto e padre Catan ne prendono possesso dopo che padre Mosca si trasferisce a Manila nella diocesi di Kaloocan. Da Ipil se ne va p.Paulo Dos santos che rientra definitivamente in Brasile. A Manila muore, improvvisamente per COVID padre Alessandro Brambilla, 78 anni.
The interest of the PIME (Pontifical Institute of Foreign Missions) for the Philippines must be attributed to p. Angelo Saverio Zanesi, a Canossian priest of Cremona, missionary in the island of Samar. In the 1966 he prompted the superior general of the Pime mons. Aristide Pirovano to send missionaries in the Philippines, inasmuch as in the same period many fathers come expelled from the Birmania. Mons. Pirovano demonstrates an interest of which p. Zanesi informs the nunzio to Manila, mons. Carlo Martini. In January of 1967, mons. Pirovano, already in travel to Hong Kong, visits the Philippines. The demands for work are plenty. On 5 March 1968, after many contacts, negotiations and an other exploratory visit mons. Pirovano writes to the new nunzio, mons. Carmine Rocco, that Pime will accepst a job offered in the dioceses of Saint Pablo (to the north) and Dipolog (to the south); just: “… the direction of the smaller seminary of Saint Pablo, the parish of Saint Cruz, the erigenda the parish of Holiday Hill, always in the same diocese, and the district missionary of Siocon, in the diocese of Dipolog”. The first three missionaries (p. Peter Bonaldo, p. Joseph Vancio and fratel Giovanni Arici) arrives in San Pablo on 6 December 1968.
In 2000, of the first missions, PIME conserved only the parish of Sirawai (once in the District of Siocon) from where came the first Filipino PIME missioner, p.Romeo Catan. Since 1985 PIME has been working in the dioceses of Parañaque (MetroManila), Zamboanga City (1968) , Kidapawan (1981), in the prelature of Ipil (1982) and since 2003 in the diocese of Antique (Island of Panay). Some engagements of the past have been yielded to the local diocesano clergy or to other religious institutes. Currently the PIME’s fathers are working in the parishes of: Sinunuc (Zamboanga), Sampoli and LakeWood (Diocese of Ipil), GreenFields-Arakan Valley (Kidapawan), Guinsang-an in San Josè de Buenavista (Panay, Antique), Mary Queen of the Apostles, in Parañaque (MetroManila) and Santa Teresita ng Batang Hesus Parish, Olaes, GMA, Diocese of Imus. The PIME still is engaged in some programs for the Aboriginal Populations, Manobo/B’ laang (Kidapawan) and Subanen (Ipil). In Zamboanga City fr.Sebastano D’ Ambra continues to direct the Silsilah, one organization for the dialogue with the Muslims. The Regional House is in Parañaque, MM.
(2017) PIMEs are no more present in Sirawai Parish (Diocese of Dipolog), Arakan Valley Parish (Diocese of Kidapawan) and Guinsang-an Parish (Diocese of Antique). New missioners are coming from India and Bangladesh. On July 2017, after his theologate in Italy Ace Abella, PIME, has been ordained priest in his native parish Mary Queen of Apostle Parish, Parañaque, MetroManila.
(2018) On December 6, 2018, the 50th anniversary of the PIME presence in the Philippines was celebrated. Various celebrations were held in the Dioceses where we are present Zamboanga City, Ipil, Kidapawan and Manila. At mid-year a new commitment began in the Diocese of Ipil giving rise to a new parish in Pagni, located in the eastern part of the town of Ipil, Zamboanga Sibugay. A change took place in the parish of Sinunuc (Zamboanga) with the departure of p.Nevio and his post taken by p.Mollick. Another in the PIME parish in Manila with the departure of p.Sandalo, replaced by p.Caelli.
(2020-2021) With COVID, presences in the regions decrease. Fr Luciano remains in Italy, first in lockdown in the home of the elderly in Rancio di Lecco, where he will witness the death of Fr Gianni Sandalo, before being assigned to the house in Treviso, Italy in June. Father Ilario Trobbiani returns to Lecco to stay permanently in Rancio, while Father Carrara says goodbye to Alta Tierra for Italy where he is appointed Secretary General of the Institute. A new parish opens in the Diocese of Ipil, but another closes, while in Lakewood Father Vettoretto and Father Catan take possession of it after Father Mosca moves to Manila in the diocese of Kaloocan. Father Paolo Dos Santos leaves Ipil and returns to Brazil for good. Father Alessandro Brambilla, 78, dies suddenly of COVID in Manila.
The new Regional Superior, Fr. Stefano Mosca and his Council took office on 1 November.
On 5 November Fr Sundeep Kumar PULIDINDI, with Fr Stefano Mosca, visited the Parish of San Giovanni Nepumoceno in Alfonso, Cavite, diocese of Imus.
On November 9, Fr Sundeep began his new role as guest priest for a year, in view of a possible future PIME role in that diocese.
On November 9, Fr.Stefano Mosca also moved to the rented apartment of Mission Station Pahabay, at Barangay Tanza 2, inserted in the Parish of Santa Cruz di Tanza, Navotas City, diocese of Kalookan, to start a new PIME presence among the slums of 4 large squatter areas in that area by the sea.
On 23 November the Regional Council had its first meeting in Zamboanga City where the management of the PIME House of Suterville in Zamboanga City was better defined, after the return to Italy of Fr. Fernando MILANI, and the visit of Fr Nathi Los1 and Fr Stefano Mosca to our missions in Mindanao.
At the end of November a two-year MCA (Memorandum of Agreement) was signed, renewable, between PIME – General Administration and the Diocese of Kalookan.
On December 5, in the evening Mass at 5:00 am in the parish of the PIME Mary Queen of Apostles in Paranaque, the Regional Superior, Fr.Stefano Mosca, handed the crucifix to Fr. Joseph Samaniego BRIONES Filipino missionary of PIME, departing for Thailand after Christmas.
In early December, Fr. Peter GEREMIA communicated to the Regional Superior the arrest in Kidapawan of one of the suspected killers of Fr. Fausto TENTORIO and the subsequent legal steps that will be planned with our lawyers.
On 10 December, Fr.Stefano Mosca with Fr.Gianni RE were received by the Ambassador and the Italian Consul in Manila in a meeting of a couple of hours at the Amba sciata to make the point on the Tentorio case and on possible help. that the Embassy would offer to safeguard the legal unfolding of the case. Father Peter GEREMIA also wrote an official statement in English approved by the Regional Superior which was sent to the General Administration, associations, Embassy, PIME Philippines members etc. Archbishop Charles John BROWN, Apostolic Nuncio of the Holy See in Manila, also asked the Regional Superior for information and wanted to be updated regularly on the developments of the Tentorio case.
On December 20, seeing the disasters caused by the super typhoon Odette in five dioceses of Mindanao, the Regional Council decided to donate money aid to the victims of the magnet through the Caritas of the diocese of Kalookan.
On December 29, Fr. Peter GEREMIA communicated the new dates set by the Kidapawan Court of Justice: January 14, 2022, presentation of witnesses; January 15, 2022, reading of the charges and summons to court; February 10, 2022, motion for payment of the bail and provisional release.
