Bisaya, Binisaya, Visayan and Cebuano

These four terms have been used widely, yet some learners have not truly understood how one differs from the others. Many have asked me whether or not Cebuano is similar to Binisaya or Bisaya spoken in Cagayan de Oro and the rest of Mindanao. In addition, some of my clients in the translation industry ask me from time to time whether Cebuano and Bisaya are one and the same language.

Bisaya refers to the people of the Visayas and the non-Muslim population of Mindanao. We have the Lumads of Mindanao, of course, with their own languages like the Manobos, Bagobos, Bukidnons, among others but majority of them speak Bisaya. Yes, Bisaya may also refer to the language spoken. Just like Filipino, the people; and Filipino, the language.

On the other hand, Binisaya is literally “in Bisaya” just like “Tinagalog” (“in Tagalog”) or “Iningles” (“in English”). This can also refer to the language. For example, “Unsay binisaya niana” (What’s [the term for] that in Bisaya). When we affix a verbal affix to it like “magbinisaya kita” then we have “let’s speak Bisaya.” Thus, my Magbinisaya Kita series.

Cebuano is the language of the people of Cebu. It’s also known as Sugbuhanon or Sinugbuhanon. It’s Bisaya. As a matter of fact, that is how Bisaya is known the world over and even in the academe which encodes it as Sebwano. However, people from Mindanao shy away from calling their language Cebuano which they consider the language of the people of Cebu. They call it Bisaya or Binisaya instead. So I often use both terms interchangeably.

Bisaya, however, should not be confused with Visaya, which is a subgroup of Philippine languages that includes Cebuano/Bisaya, Hiligaynon, Waray, Aklanon, Kinaray-a, etc.

San Giovanni Battista

L’Italia esportava nelle Ispano-Filippine in prevalenza fiammiferi, pietre focaie, vermouth, vini da tavola, mobili in legno, cappelli, ombrelli, vetri e cristalli prodotti a Venezia. (…)

Hostage Robert Hall killed

A Canadian held by the Islamist group Abu Sayyaf in the Philippines has been killed in the island of Jolo.

Robert Hall was kidnapped in September 2015 along with three other hostages from Canada, the Philippines and Norway.  Mr Hall was killed on Monday after a deadline for a ransom expired.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeu statement:  “It is with deep sadness that I have reason to believe that a Canadian citizen, Robert Hall, held hostage in the Philippines since September 21, 2015, has been killed by his captors,”

The Abu Sayyaf was demanding P600 million for the release of Hall, Norwegian Kjartan Sekkingstad and Filipina Marites Flor.

Hostages are very  vulnerable. They are civilians that are held against their will for political or monetary gain by  groups of terrorists, like AbuSayyaf.  On the other hand  the government and military are called to rescue them alive when negotiation is no longer an option or a dead line expired, but so far, it looks like an impossible dream to realize.  We hope that in some way, in the future, this can finally happen.

Closing Fabella Hospital

Manila Bulletin

Fabella-Hospital-0127A Catholic priest has supported the call against the plan to close a popular public hospital in Manila, which has been dubbed as “baby factory”.

According to Franciscan Father Dexter Toledo closing the Dr. Jose Fabella Memorial Hospital in Sta. Cruz, Manila should not be the government’s last resort, what they should do is to develop the hospital to further serve those in need, particularly the less fortunate. He noted that the poor mothers are the living proofs why the facility must remain open.

“Instead of contemplating its closure, we call on our new leaders to develop the hospital thus helping it serve more of our citizens,” Toledo said in an article posted on the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) news website.

The Catholic priest added that Fabella Hospital has served many poor families who were in need of medical assistance, especially pregnant women because of the low cost of its services.

“My mother in fact gave birth to me in that same hospital and forever I will be grateful to it. It deeply saddens me that there are unconfirmed talks of its possible closure,” said the executive secretary of the Association of Major Religious Superiors of the Philippines (AMRSP).

The government-owned maternity ward is known as a “baby factory” because it delivers more than a hundred babies everyday. On Thursday, several women’s groups rallied outside the hospital to demonstrate their strong opposition against its planned closure. The Save Fabella Hospital Movement said the closure could also displace more than 1,300 hospital employees, adding that many resident physicians have already received termination contract letters from the management. The group noted the facility’s structural needs have been “criminally neglected” and its deteriorating conditions became justification for its closure. They also called on president-elect Rodrigo Duterte to intervene and save the hospital from the impending abolition.

When Britain ruled Manila

The British invimagesasion of Manila between 1762 and 1764 was an episode in Philippine colonial history when the British Empire occupied the Spanish colonial capital of Manila and the nearby port of Cavite. The resistance from the provisional Spanish colonial government established by members of the Royal Audience of Manila and their Filipino allies prevented British forces from taking control of territory beyond the neighbouring towns of Manila and Cavite. The British occupation was ended as part of the peace settlement of the Seven Years’ War.
