Giancarlo amava i piccoli, i poveri, i diseredati.

E poi a Sibuco, Zamboanga, a Bayog e ancora a Payao dove venne rapito 5 anni fa. Il rapimento lasciò un segno in lui. A me sembrava cambiato.

Ciao!

—————–

What to write about father Giancarlo Bossi now that he has physically left? Many people knew him and heard about him after his abduction in 2007. As for me he was one of my best friends and I spent 38 years near him, from when we got together in the first year of theology at the PIME teologate in Monza, Italy, until last June at his home in Abbiategrasso. We’ve gone through a lot of adventures and laughters, with the other companions in the PIME Philippines, in the early years, with fr. Luciano Benedetti and fr. Gianni Re. The John’s Gospel of this Sunday describes him very well. Jesus said to his disciples: “Whoever receives one of these children in my name welcomes me.”

Giancarlo loved the little ones, the poor, the dispossessed. He could easily approach them and understand them. For them he was able to make great sacrifices, and even risk his life. Probably it was spontaneous for him because he considered himself to be small and poor before the Lord, even if in Italy at the time of the departure for the Philippines someone called him Bud Spencer for his size and high-sounding laugh.

In the Philippines he had a bit of all experiences. At the beginning we were together in Tondo, among the slum dwellers. There we studied the Tagalog, our first filipino’s language and tried hard to understand what was the best for the people living in poverty and oppression; a result of the selfishness of a few! When the PIMEs left Tondo, we studied one of the language of Mindanao, Bisaya, and then worked in the Prelature of Ipil. Those were hard years for Giancarlo, always up and down the mountains to visit the various communities. In Siay there were about seventy chapels. Then he engaged in the construction of the parish and mission of Payao with its various structures in an area barely reachable with a motorbike. Then Sibuco, Zamboanga del Norte, back in Ipil in Bayog and again in Payao where he was kidnapped five years ago. The kidnapping left a mark on him. It seemed to have changed him. He was more tired, sometimes indecisive, but also more generous then before and always ready to serve where there was need, especially among the poor. In February, this year, he had asked the regional community to be re-assigned in Mindanao, even though it was aware that some sort of illness had began to boder him. He wanted to go in Arakan, the place were father Fausto Tentorio was killed last year in october. Then the, somehaw unexpected, return to Italy and the final illness.

As for me now there are left many memories in my heart. Past events done together. It will take some time to consider a past that, in any case, continues. I will not see him again, physically, here in this life, but his strong voice and soft tone, his disarming laugh, his jokes in Milanese dialect and his ability to listen and comfort others will not easely disappear from my life.

Goodbye ‘Boss’!!!  And give me a hand again, as you did many times before. Now you, in a mysterious way, can do it even better.    Ciao!
