Marine Major General Mohammad Dolorfino said the MILF has ceased assisting government efforts to locate Fr Giancarlo Bossi, from Milan. He said the ad hoc joint action group (AHJAG formed on december 22,2004), which authorizes the MILF to help in fighting criminalities and terrorism (even Abu Sayyaf Group (ASG) and Jemaah Islamiyah (JI)) in areas where they are actively operating, has expired. Unless it is renewed, the MILF cannot help in the rescue efforts, he said”…but Mohagher Iqbal, a senior MILF rebel leader, said his is still helping security forces track down the kidnappers and their hostage. The joint rescue operation is going on,” Iqbal told the regional newspaper, the Mindanao Examiner. He said the MILF decision to continue the rescue operation is based on humanitarian ground.

In any case it seems important the renewal of the mandate of the International Monitoring Team (IMT) and the Ad Hoc Joint Action Group (AHJAG) . The IMT could  continue to monitor the status of the ceasefire, the socio-economic and humanitarian agreements between the government and the MILF . ITM is composed of delegates from Malaysia, Libya, Brunei and Japan.  AHJAG, on the other hand, is a group of military and MILF representatives mandated to isolate and disarmed kidnap-for-ransom groups or lost command rebel units and other criminal elements operating in Mindanao. Also clearing and disposing ladmines.  AHJAG in previous years prevented conflict escalation in MILF strongholds in western Mindanao and led to a few cases of the disciplining of extremists .
