To all People of Good Will:

Last Monday, 23 November 2009, the shocking news of a horrifying massacre began circulating through radio, text messages, and word of mouth. Twenty four hours later, there were still no complete and accurate reports on what really happened along the highway between Shariff Aguak and Kauran, Ampatuan, Maguindanao. The number of people massacred continues to rise even now, family-members, friends, legal advocates, journalists, and civilians who found themselves in the wrong place at the wrong time.

From the beginning there was no doubt that we were hearing or reading of a tragedy unprecedented in the history of the once empire province of Cotabato, unprecedented in its ferocity, brutality and brazenness.
People cry out to God and to one another, “How could this thing happen?” And as more and more bodies were unearthed from that now infamous “killing field,” the wailing and grieving of hundreds of families related to the victims as brothers, sisters, mothers, fathers, cousins, nephews and nieces, in laws or friends are turning into righteous rage and the natural desire for vendetta. For the sake of humanity we must not give in to this desire to seek vengeance that can so easily spiral into a cycle of violence.
From the depths of my soul as a religious leader, I condemn in the strongest possible way this barbaric act of massacre as a conscience-less crime that cries out to heaven.

As a citizen I demand that the government, without fear or favor, use all its powers and decisively act to identify and arrest the perpetrators and apply the full force of the law on them.

As a believer in the God of all, I pray for the souls of the victims and ask the Lord to console, comfort, and give strength to their families. I grieve with them and express my deepest sympathies.

Many politicians and non-politicians have quickly blamed others for this shocking tragedy. This is only partly right and conveniently absolves us from any culpability. My sense of history leads me to believe that somehow we all share the blame to a certain extent. A culture of impunity has, indeed, grown through the years. Political administrations and officials from all parties from the 1960s to the present have cultivated and exploited to their own advantage a social structure of traditional leadership that was meant to be for the good of the people. This was so with powerful political families in other parts of the country. We have not tried to change this culture of political convenience and thus allowed a culture of impunity to endure through successive administrations. Elections have not and will not change this situation. We simply get more of the same.

We need to change from the bottom-up, from individuals to families, from families to communities. We need to change our values that tolerate evil or choose the lesser evil. We need to learn new values that will transform our cultures from within. For Muslims the Koran, faithfully and correctly followed, will be a guide. For Christians, the Holy Bible, also faithfully and correctly interpreted, will provide direction for value transformation.

Beloved People of Good Will, yes, indeed, we must condemn. We must demand decisive action for justice. We must pray. But we also must begin to change. With the grace of God, we can.

Il tributo di morte in un attacco ad un gruppo di sostenitori politici e giornalisti nella provincia di Maguindanao (Isola di Mindanao) è salito oggi a 56 con il recupero di nuove salme. Altre non ancora ritrovate. Le vittime, sarebbero in tutto piu di 60, sono state fermate alle 10.30 del mattino di lunedi ad un posto di blocco in Barangay Kauran, nella strada nazionale tra Cotabato e Isulan, e poi portate via da un centinaio di uomini armati. Si stavano recando in gruppo, e in un convoglio di auto, verso l’ufficio della Comissione Elettorale di Shariff Aguak (vicino a Cotabato City), la capitale della Provincia di Maguindanao, per formalizzare alcune canditature per le prossime elezioni politiche 2010. Il responsabili sarebbero legati ad un potente politico della zona, Datu Andal Ampatuan e guidati da Andal Ampatuan Jr., sindaco di Shariff Aguak e un ispettore della locale Polizia. Fra le vittime anche la moglie e la sorella di Ismael Mangudadatu rivale politico degli Ampatuan. Molte le donne che stavano accompagnando la delegazione. La maggior parte delle vittime sono state identificate dallo stesso Ismael “Toto„ Mangudadatu, vice-sindaco di Buluan, che intende comunque correre come governatore di Maguindanao nelle prossime elezioni. Tra gli uccisi anche 12 giornalisti che stavano seguendo il gruppo dei Mangudadatu in nome dei loro rispettivi media, radio e giornali.
Ė uno dei più atroci massacri avvenuti nelle Filippine negli ultimi 30 anni.

“Gasi” is a special Subanen drink. A rice-yeast fermented beverage made of rice, manioc, maize, and/or Job’s tears mash. It is drunk with bamboo straws inserted in the bottom of a Chinese jar containing the fermented mash. Each drinking turn is preceded by the addition of water to keep the jar filled to the brim. When the water is sucked up through the straw it draws an alcoholic mixture from the mash as well.
A festival meal is the usual social context of Subanen drinking. The “gasi” drinking occurs only during festivity and is the focus of the social gathering. Figuratively speaking, the function of the drinking straw is not only as a channel for the drink, but mainly as a channel for the drink-talk. The Subanen have an expression for this: “talug bwat dig beksuk” or “talk from the straw”. The drinking-talk is a major medium of interfamily communication for which the festive gathering provides the opportunity. As there are no absoluet, society-wide status positions, one’s role in society at large, partucularly for the Subanen male, depends to a considerable extent upon one’s verbal performace during drinking encounters.
The strategy of drinking-talk is to manipolate role relations among the participants thereby maximizing one’s own share of drink and talk in order to assume “esteem-at-tracting and authority-wielding roles.” All drinking sessions follow a rigid cultural pattern.Beginning with initial tasting and simple terms of address, those of lesser verbal ability are gradually eliminated. Finally, discussion and argument usually lead to litigation. The session ends with a prestigious display of true verbal art which involves stylized patterns of Subanen song and verse composition. Not only are songs and poems improvised, but a recital of traditional Subanen tales from memory is required. The most skilled in “talking from the straw” are de facto leaders of the society.

Un gruppo di MILF (Moro islamic Liberation Front) ha consegnato padre Michael Sinnott, 79 anni, all’ambasciatore irlandese Rafael Seguis e al generale Reynaldo Sealana nel villaggio di Sagnali, Zamboanga City, alle 4.25 del mattino. Padre Sinnott era stato rapito lo scorso 11 ottobre.

Diversa la sorte del maestro Gabriel Canizares, 36 anni, rapito il 18 ottobre e ucciso dai suoi rapitori il 9 novembre nell’isola di Jolo.

Onorare i morti è una tradizione antichissima fra gli asiatici. Nelle Filippine, sono la riverenza ed il rispetto profondo per gli antenati che definiscono una delle celebrazioni più cattoliche, Il Giorno delle Anime che si celebra i primi di novembre. In lingua Filipino, è chiamato Undas e in Cebuano è Kalag-kalag. Come El Dia de los Muertos in Messico è un’occasione molto festiva. L’intero paese si mette in moto alla ricerca di … fiori da portare in cimitero, non prima del primo novembre e nemmeno dopo il secondo. Negli ultimi giorni di ottobre il mercato del fiore prospera. Il prezzo di un mazzo di fiori può raddoppiare o triplicare ma dipende dal giorno. Più vicino è al 1 novembre, e più elevato il prezzo. Le candele pure sono naturalmente in grande richiesta. E poi i cibi e le squisitezze alimentari, i dolci tipici e l`immancabile pansit che con i litri di bibite analcoliche fredde, entrano nel cimitero a dare maggior festività alle bianche tombe che sudati preti e accoliti benedicono, una ad una, con altri litri ma di acqua benedetta. Nei mercati locali i fiori si trovano distesi nelle bancherelle dove taglia-fiori sono impegnati ad arrangiare mazzi, i più costosi poi sistemati in ciotole di varia fattura. Naturalmente, i fiori a basso prezzo sono qelli che arrivano direttamente dai poderi vicini, ma poi bisogna conoscere dove si mettono i contadini che li vendono a volte non troppo distanti dall`entrata del cimitero sotto qualche tenda fatta con sacchi di yuta. Solitamente hanno solo una due o tre varietà di fiori come i bianchi o gialli poto-poto, oppure la ilang-ilang abbastanza profumata o la comune “Regina delle spine”, a quattro petali rossi che quasi sempre orna gli altari dalle nostre parti. I fiori più belli e costosi arrivano comunque dalla Capitale MetroManila o dall`estero, portati dai parenti che ritornano in provincia per l`occasione (sono anche i giorni di vacanze scolastiche tra il primo e secondo semestre). Naturalmente sono rose, orchidee, margherite, e i classici crisantemi. I tulipani no. Ai fiori si aggiungono immancabilmente le barrette appiccicose dei lecca-lecca e i coni di gelati che si sciolgono miseramente tra le dita. Servono per tenere a bada i bambini o forse, con i fiori, a ricordare come è bella e dolce la vita anche tra morti e tombe.  Quest’anno infine c’è atmosfera irreale dopo il tramonto del primo novembre mentre  centinaia di tremolanti lumi continuano ad illuminare i piccoli luoghi di riposo delle anime e in alto la luna piena unico lume che appartiene a tutti.

Gli Abu Sayyaf avrebbero rapito lunedì 19 il direttore didattico della scuola elementare di Kanague, nella provincia di Jolo. Alle 4 del pomeriggio, Gabriel “Bong„ Canizares, 36, è stato rapito da 12 armati mentre, con altri insegnanti, stava rientrando a casa nel villaggio di Patikul.

Il rapimento di Canizares succede mentre la polizia cerca ancora di individuare e di mettersi in contatto con i rapitori di padre Michael Sinnott, rapito l 11 ottobre in Pagadian City in Zamboanga del Sur.
